A visitor’s experience should be a crescendo of nature. The Aquarium will accelerate admissions with a new ticketing annex, update the Great Hall, remodel the café referencing the history of Newport’s sustainable fisheries and add a new Moon Jellies exhibit. A new nature play area will engage children in the outdoors. They will scramble through massive logs, climb a tower to view a nest, slide down a mock river chute, crawl through tunnels and see animal presentations at the new outdoor amphitheater.
Phase 2: Three Indoor Galleries
The shore-to-ocean-depths narrative begins in the first gallery. Temporary exhibits space will be refined, and permanent exhibits updated. The second gallery will expand to accommodate a larger, more accessible touch pool, and an interactive science station. The third gallery will be themed on the Pacific Rim and feature Mangrove and Indo-Pacific Coral Reef exhibits with tropical species, and new gallery of jellies. Interpretation will include conservation issues such as the impact of climate change, plastic pollution and the warming, rising ocean.
Phase 3: Marine Rehabilitation Center
The Aquarium is the only facility in Oregon authorized to provide critical care to endangered marine wildlife, like sea turtles, northern fur seals and snowy plovers. A new Marine Rehabilitation Center for staff, veterinarians and students will replace old warehouses used to diagnose, quarantine and treat injured or ill marine animals. It will also care for Aquarium’s current marine population and safeguard them against disease.
